Public Land Hunting Checklist
Public land rewards preparation. Here's the checklist we run through before every public-land hunt — save it, print it, or just read through it the night before you head out.
Before You Go
Confirm the unit/area boundaries and check for any late season rule changes.
Have your license and tags printed or saved offline — don't count on cell signal.
Download offline maps (onX, Gaia, or your state's GPS layer) before you lose signal.
Check weather for the full day, not just the morning — conditions can flip fast.
Tell someone your planned route and expected return time.
Gear Checklist
Waterproof boots broken in and matched with the right sock weight.
Base layer system for the morning cold, plus a packable outer shell.
Blaze orange where required — check your state's specific requirement.
Headlamp with spare batteries — public land access points are rarely lit.
First aid kit and a way to signal for help without cell service.
Safety Checklist
Know the other hunters likely to be in your area and plan around pressure, not just game sign.
Carry more water than you think you'll need — public land access often means a longer walk out than expected.
Have a no-signal communication plan (satellite messenger or a firm check-in time with someone off the mountain).
